Fire Island is of the Pleistocene epoch, a relative newcomer geologically. The beaches
show longshore transit by which a beach is born. (The current runs parallel to shore
transporting deposits of sand.) There are many types of dunes. The first line is
called primary dunes. Like soldiers they appear impregnable from the beach, but are
exceedingly vulnerable. Constantly eroded by wind, they are easily washed out by
storms. On the windward side of the dunes are the foredunes. Even in their advantageous location the water often erodes them. Constantly fed by wind-blown sand, the steep faces become softer and more rounded with time.
